Wildlife Restoration
Rebuilding functional wildlife populations to restore natural ecological balance.
Wildlife restoration is the ecological engine of the Upemba recovery model. Large grazers such as zebra, buffalo and antelope are essential system engineers. By grazing, they reduce combustible biomass, stimulate root growth and improve soil structure. This allows water to infiltrate, reduces fire frequency and restores vegetation cycles.
The restoration programme introduces animals through carefully controlled phases, supported by monitoring, veterinary oversight and long-term population management. As grazer populations recover, the ecosystem begins to stabilise, enabling the gradual return of predators and a more self-regulating natural balance. This approach transforms conservation from species protection into functional ecosystem recovery.
