Rewild

Rebuilding ecological processes through the return of key wildlife species.

Rewilding in Upemba focuses on restoring the natural processes that shape healthy savanna ecosystems. The loss of large grazing animals disrupted vegetation dynamics, increased fire intensity and reduced water retention across the landscape.

The planned reintroduction of species such as zebra, buffalo and antelope helps restore grazing cycles that regulate biomass and improve soil conditions. Over time, these processes support biodiversity recovery and strengthen ecosystem stability.

As herbivore populations recover, vegetation structure changes and water infiltration improves. This creates the conditions needed for natural ecological feedback to return.

Rewilding is therefore not simply about bringing animals back. It is a practical ecological strategy aimed at restarting the natural engine of the landscape.

The long-term goal is a self-regulating ecosystem where wildlife and habitats sustain each other without continuous intervention.
